New France was a territory colonized by France in mainland North America. Its history began with the exploration of the Gulf of Saint Lawrence by Jacques Cartier in 1534.
The colony remained under French control until 1763, when it was ceded to Great Britain and Spain under the terms of the Treaty of Paris.
