Sett refers to the subterranean den of a badger, characterized by an intricate network of tunnels and multiple entrances. These structures are typically excavated in well-drained, easily diggable soil types like sand and are often located on sloping terrain that provides natural cover.
Large setts can be expansive enough to house 15 or more animals, featuring up to 300 meters of tunnels and as many as 40 openings. While elaborate tunneling systems take many years to complete, some historical examples have been identified in use for over ten thousand years. In Southern England, certain setts are estimated to cover areas exceeding 2,000 square meters.
