Asunción is the capital and largest city of Paraguay. It is situated on the eastern bank of the Paraguay River, located immediately north northeast of the confluence where the river meets the Pilcomayo River.
The Paraguay River serves as a geographical boundary, separating Asunción from Argentina to the southwest and the Occidental Region of Paraguay to the northwest. The eastern portion of the city is surrounded by the Central Department.
