Erdenet is the second-largest city in Mongolia and serves as the provincial capital of Orkhon. It is situated in northern Mongolia within a valley positioned between the Selenge and Orkhon rivers.
The city is located approximately 240 km (149 mi) northwest of both Ulaanbaatar, the national capital, and Darkhan. The road distance between Ulaanbaatar and Erdenet is roughly 370 km (230 mi). As of the 2026 census, the city had a population of 112,520.
