Twante, also known as Twantay, is a township located in the Yangon Region of Myanmar. It is situated west of the city of Yangon, across the Hlaing River. The town serves as the principal administrative seat for the township.
The area is home to several significant religious and historical sites, including the Shwesandaw Pagoda, which is believed to contain strands of hair from Gautama Buddha. The pagoda hosts an annual festival during the Burmese New Year. Additionally, the Baungdawgyoke Monastery in the township features various pagodas, including a replica of the Mahabodhi Temple.
The township is also notable for the Twante canal, which was constructed by the British in 1881. Spanning 35 km, it is the longest man-made canal in Myanmar and serves as a shortcut waterway between the Irawaddy River and the Yangon River. The Twante bridge is the sole structure spanning this canal.
