Kalay, also known as Kale, is a significant town located in the Sagaing Region of Myanmar. It serves as the district headquarters for the Kalay District and is situated upstream from Mandalay and Monywa on the Myittha River, which is a tributary of the Chindwin River.
The town has recently become one of the fastest developing areas in Myanmar due to its role in international transit. This growth is driven by the 165-kilometre Tamu–Kalay section of the India–Myanmar–Thailand Trilateral Highway, which was constructed by the Border Roads Organization of India as part of the Look-East Connectivity policy to facilitate trans-border movement.
