Amarapura is a former capital city in Myanmar that currently serves as a township within the larger Mandalay city area. Geographically, it is bounded by the Irrawaddy River to the west, Chanmyathazi Township to the north, and the ancient capital site of Ava (Inwa) to the south.
During the Konbaung period, Amarapura served as the capital of Myanmar on two occasions before being replaced by Mandalay in 1859. Due to urban sprawl, it is now considered part of Mandalay and is historically referred to as Taungmyo in relation to the modern city. Today, the township is recognized for its traditional bronze casting and silk and cotton weaving industries.
The area remains a popular destination for tourists traveling on day trips from Mandalay. It retains its historical significance as a former seat of government while contributing to the local economy through its established craft traditions.
