Sittwe, formerly known as Akyab, is the capital city of Rakhine State in Myanmar (Burma). It serves as the primary administrative seat for both the Sittwe District and Sittwe Township.
The city is situated on an estuarial island formed by the confluence of three rivers: the Kaladan, Mayu, and Lay Mro. These rivers empty into the Bay of Bengal. As of 2019, the population of Sittwe was estimated to be over 120,000 inhabitants.
