Timbuktu is an ancient city located in Mali, positioned approximately 20 kilometres north of the Niger River. It serves as the capital of the Tombouctou Region, which is one of the country's 19 administrative regions.
According to the 2022 census, the city has a population of around one million people. It remains a significant historical and geographical landmark within the West African region.
