Goundam is a town and commune located in north-central Mali within the Tombouctou Region. It serves as the capital of the Goundam Cercle, which is one of five subdivisions of the region.
According to the 2009 census, the commune had a population of 16,253 residents. The primary ethnic groups inhabiting the area are the Songhay, Tuareg, and Fulani.
