Markala is a commune located in the Ségou Region of Mali. It is situated along the Niger River, approximately 35 kilometers downstream from the town of Ségou.
The commune covers an area of 318 square kilometers and encompasses 30 villages. As of 2009, its population was recorded at 45,961. The main village within the commune is Diamarabougou, which is located on the right bank adjacent to the Markala dam.
The region is notable for hosting Mali's primary irrigation dam. In addition to its role in irrigation, the dam serves as an important road bridge connecting areas across the river.
