Kayes is a city located in western Mali situated along the Sénégal River. It serves as the capital of the Kayes administrative region and is positioned approximately 420 kilometres (260 mi) northwest of the national capital, Bamako.
According to the 2009 census, the city had a population of 127,368. It functions as a regional hub within the western portion of the country.
