Ohrid is a city in North Macedonia and serves as the seat of the Ohrid Municipality. It is the largest city on Lake Ohrid and ranks as the eighth-largest city in the country, with a population exceeding 38,000 inhabitants as of 2021. The city is situated southwest of Skopje and west of Resen and Bitola.
The city is renowned for its historical significance, having once contained 365 churches—one for each day of the year—earning it the nickname "Jerusalem of the Balkans." It features a landscape rich in monuments and picturesque houses, with tourism serving as a predominant economic activity.
In 1979 and 1980, Ohrid and Lake Ohrid were recognized by UNESCO as Cultural and Natural World Heritage Sites. Notably, Ohrid is one of only 40 sites globally that are designated as both Cultural and Natural World Heritage sites by UNESCO.
