Teyateyaneng is a town situated in the Berea district of Lesotho. It is commonly abbreviated as T.Y. and derives its name from the two twin rivers that flow to its north and south, both of which eventually lead into the Mohokare, also known as the Caledon River. This river serves as the western boundary between Lesotho and South Africa.
The town's name is linked to the southern Teja-tejana River, though it was later changed to Teyateyaneng, potentially due to British influence during the late 1800s when the country became a Protectorate. The rivers are characterized by vast quantities of sand that cause feet to dip rapidly when crossing them; this characteristic may suggest that the name translates to a "place of quick sands."
