Kelaniya is a suburb located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. Situated approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) from Colombo Fort, it is geographically defined by its proximity to the Kelani River, which serves as the boundary between the suburb and the Colombo District.
The area is primarily known for a Buddhist temple situated on the banks of the Kelani River. This site serves as an important religious center dedicated to the veneration of the figures Vibhishana and Avalokiteshvara. Additionally, Kelaniya is recognized as the location of the University of Kelaniya.
