Kalutara, also known as Kalutota, is a major city located in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. It serves as the administrative capital of the Kalutara District and is situated approximately 43 km (27 mi) south of the national capital, Colombo.
The city is geographically notable for its position at the center where the Kalu Ganga, one of Sri Lanka's four major rivers, joins the sea. Economically, the region is recognized for producing various items made from coconut palm fiber, such as ropes and baskets. Additionally, the area is a production site for mangosteens, a fruit that was introduced to the country from Malaysia during the 19th century.
