Weligama is a town located on the south coast of Sri Lanka within the Matara District of the Southern Province. It is governed by an Urban Council and sits at an elevation of approximately 9 metres (30 ft) above sea level, situated about 144 kilometres (89 mi) south of the capital city, Colombo.
The name Weligama translates literally to "sandy village," a designation that refers to the area's sandy sweep bay. The town is primarily characterized by its coastal geography and its location along the southern shoreline of the island.
