Nuwara Eliya is a city located in the hill country of Sri Lanka's Central Province. Situated at an altitude of 1,868 meters (6,128 feet), it serves as the administrative capital of the Nuwara Eliya District. The name of the city translates to "city on the plain" or "city of light."

The region is characterized by a picturesque landscape and a temperate climate, making it the coolest area in Sri Lanka. It is recognized as the most important location for tea production within the country. Additionally, the city is overlooked by Pidurutalagala, which is the tallest mountain in Sri Lanka.
