Gampola is a town situated in the Kandy District of Sri Lanka's Central Province. It is governed by an Urban Council and serves as a notable historical site within the region.
The town gained historical significance during the mid-fourteenth century when it was established as the capital of the island by King Buwanekabahu IV, who reigned for four years. The final monarch to rule from Gampola was King Buwanekabahu V, who governed the island for a period of 29 years.
Gampola is home to several cultural landmarks, most notably the Saliyalapura Temple. This site houses the longest sleeping Buddha statue in South Asia.
