Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. It is situated on a peninsula located at the midpoint of the country's Mediterranean coast. With a population of approximately 2.4 million people as of 2025, Greater Beirut accounts for just under half of Lebanon's total population.
The city is one of the oldest in the world, with a recorded history of habitation spanning more than 5,000 years. It currently ranks as the twelfth-largest city in the Levant region and the sixteenth-largest city in the Arab world.
