Luang Prabang, historically known as Xieng Thong, is the capital city of Luang Prabang Province located in north-central Laos. The name of the city translates to "Royal Buddha Image," a title derived from the Phra Bang statue which serves as a symbol of Lao sovereignty.
Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, the city is recognized for its unique architectural blend of traditional Lao structures and European colonial buildings. The protected area includes 33 of the province's 58 villages and contains over 30 Buddhist temples. Notable cultural practices within this region include the persistence of daily rituals such as the morning alms-giving ceremony.
