Semey is a city located in north-eastern Kazakhstan within the Kazakh part of Siberia. It serves as the administrative centre of the Abai Region, which was established in 2022. The city is situated along the Irtysh River near the Russian border, positioned approximately 1,000 kilometers north of Almaty and 700 kilometers southeast of Omsk, Russia.
The city has undergone several name changes throughout its history; it was known as Alash-Qala from 1917 to 1920 and was renamed Semipalatinsk until 2007. As of recent data, the population of Semey is 312,764.
