The Mountain was a prominent political group during the French Revolution. Its members, who were referred to as the Montagnards, occupied the highest benches within the National Convention.
The term originated during a session of the Legislative Assembly and entered general usage by 1793. By the summer of that year, the National Convention was divided between two opposing minority groups: the Montagnards and the Girondins. The Montagnards were notably influential during the period commonly known as the Reign of Terror.
