Tongyeong is a coastal city located in South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea. It covers an area of 238.81 km² and had a population of 139,869 as of 2010. The administrative divisions of the city include one eup, six myeon, and eleven dong. In 1995, Tongyeong was formed through the reunion of Chungmu city and Tongyeong county.
The city is geographically characterized by its proximity to several landmasses, including the Goseong Peninsula, Hansando, Mireuk Island, Yokji Island, and various other islets. Historically, the area was known as Chungmu, named after the posthumous name of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. The name Tongyeong translates to "command post" and is associated with Admiral Yi, who utilized a nearby base on Hansan Island.
