Sangju is a city located in the North Gyeongsang Province of South Korea. While it is currently characterized as a rural area, it possesses a long history and was once considered a key city. It is historically significant enough to provide half of the name for the Gyeongsang Province, alongside the city of Gyeongju.
The city is commonly referred to by the nickname Sam Baek, which translates to "Three Whites." This moniker refers to three prominent agricultural products that are characteristic of the region: rice, silkworm cocoons, and dried persimmons.
