Pyeongtaek is a city located in the southwestern part of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The city was established in 1940 as a union of two districts and was officially elevated to city status in 1986.
The region is home to a South Korean naval base and a large concentration of United States troops. It served as the site of the Battle of Pyongtaek during the Korean War, which was an early engagement between U.S. and North Korean forces. The city is also the location of Pyeongtaek University.
The South Korean government intends to transform Pyeongtaek into an international economic hub. This development plan coincides with the planned relocation of United States Forces Korea (USFK) to the city.
