Kaesong is a special city located in the southern region of North Korea. It served as the capital of Korea during the Taebong kingdom and the subsequent Goryeo dynasty, where it was known by the name Songdo. The city currently functions as a light industry center for the country.
Historically, Kaesong prospered as a trade center notable for the production of Korean ginseng. It contains the remains of the Manwoldae palace and is situated near the Kaesong Industrial Region close to the border with South Korea.
