Hwadae is a county located in the southern region of North Hamgyong province in North Korea. It covers an area of approximately 460 km2 and has a population of about 70,000 residents. The county's geography is defined by its coastal position, as it adjoins the Sea of Japan to the east and south.
The administrative boundaries of Hwadae are bordered by Kimchaek and Kilchu to the west and Myŏngch'ŏn to the north. It was established in the 1950s during a general reorganization of local government, formed from portions of the Kilchu and Myŏngch'ŏn counties. Currently, the county is divided into one ŭp and 20 ri.
