Chŏngju is a city located in the southern region of North P'yŏngan Province, North Korea. It was previously designated as a kun, or county, before being reclassified as a si in 1994.
The geography of the area is characterized by mostly level terrain that becomes mountainous toward the north. To the south, the region features the Chongju Plain, where hills reach heights of no more than 200 metres (660 ft). Additionally, the administrative boundaries of Chŏngju encompass approximately 10 islands situated in the Yellow Sea.
