Haeju is a city located in North Korea within South Hwanghae Province. It serves as the administrative center of the province and is situated near Haeju Bay.
Historically, the city became a strategic port for Sino-Korean trade at the beginning of the 20th century. In modern times, the local economy includes chemical-related enterprises and a cement factory. As of 2008, the population of Haeju was estimated to be approximately 273,300.
