Serei Saophoan, commonly known as Sisophon, is a city located in Cambodia. It serves as the capital and largest city of the Banteay Meanchey Province and ranks as the fourth most populous city in the country. The city is geographically situated at the intersection where Cambodia's National Highway 5 and National Highway 6 separate.
While the government uses the administrative name Serei Sophon, the name Sisophon is more commonly used and is derived from the Thai pronunciation Si Sophon from a period when the area was under Thai rule. Additionally, the city is sometimes referred to by the nickname "Svay," a term primarily used by workers, truck drivers, and train drivers transporting goods; however, the origin of this name remains unknown.
