Tashkurgan is a town located in the far western region of China, situated near the border with Tajikistan. It serves as the seat of the Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County within the Xinjiang autonomous region.
Historically known by the names Sarikol and Shitoucheng, the town is primarily inhabited by Tajiks, who are ethnic Pamiris residing in the Pamir Mountains of Xinjiang. These people make up slightly more than half of the local population.
