Kitengela is a municipality located in the Kajiado County region of Kenya. It is situated approximately 34 kilometres south of the capital city, Nairobi, and forms part of the greater Metropolitan Area. The area contains a town also named Kitengela.
The region was founded around 1940 by Chief Ole Mutunkei and his son Simeon Sinkeet. It was later designated as The Kitengela group ranch, which originally comprised 18,292 hectares and 214 registered members. In 1988, the government subdivided this land to encourage private ownership within pastoral systems with the goal of commercializing livestock production.
Since the subdivision began, land fragmentation and sales in Kitengela have increased steadily. This development has led to significant population growth; the human population in the area rose from 6,548 in 1989 to 17,347 in 1999, reaching 58,167 by 2009.
