Uruma is a city located in the Okinawa Prefecture of Japan. It was established on April 1, 2005, following the merger of the cities of Gushikawa and Ishikawa with the towns of Katsuren and Yonashiro. The city covers an area of 86.00 km² and has a population density of approximately 1,500 people per km².
Geographically, Uruma encompasses part of the east coast of southern Okinawa Island, the Katsuren Peninsula, and the eight Yokatsu Islands. The city is home to several significant historical sites, including Katsuren Castle, Agena Castle, Iha Castle, and the Iha Shell Mound. Additionally, the Yokatsu Islands contain numerous sites important to the Ryukyuan religion.
Uruma is notable for hosting the largest venue for Okinawan bullfighting. A prominent modern symbol of the city is the Mid-Sea Road, an infrastructure project that crosses the ocean to connect the main island of Okinawa to the Yokatsu Islands.
