Shimonoseki is a city located in the Yamaguchi Prefecture of Japan. As of June 30, 2023, it had an estimated population of 248,193 residing in 128,762 households. The city covers a total area of 716.18 square kilometers, resulting in a population density of approximately 350 persons per square kilometer.
The city is the largest in Yamaguchi Prefecture and ranks as the fifth-largest city in the Chūgoku region by population. Shimonoseki is notably recognized as the "home of Fugu," serving as Japan's largest harvester of pufferfish, which are locally caught and prepared for consumption.
