Utsunomiya is the capital and largest city of Tochigi Prefecture, located in the northern Kantō region of Japan. As of July 1, 2023, the city had an estimated population of 513,584 and a population density of 1,232 persons per square kilometre. The total area of the city encompasses 416.85 square kilometres.

The city is notably famous for its gyoza. Utsunomiya is home to more than two hundred gyoza restaurants, making it a significant culinary destination for this specific dish.
