Tōkamachi is a city situated in the Niigata Prefecture of Japan. As of July 1, 2019, the city had an estimated population of 28,728 residents living in 19,823 households. It covers a total area of 590.39 square kilometres (227.95 sq mi), with a population density of 86.3 persons per km². While some of the city's borders are not well defined, it remains a distinct administrative region within the prefecture.
The name Tōkamachi is derived from the historical practice of holding a market every tenth day of the month. This naming convention is linked to local commerce traditions; for instance, the nearby former town of Muikamachi held its own local markets on days ending in six each month.
