Kyoto, officially known as Kyoto City, is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region of Honshu, Japan's largest and most populous island. As of 2020, the city had a population of 1.46 million people, ranking it as the ninth-most populous city in the country. More than half of the total population of Kyoto Prefecture resides within the city limits.
The city serves as the cultural anchor for the Greater Kyoto metropolitan statistical area, which has a census-estimated population of 3.8 million people. Additionally, Kyoto is integrated into the larger Keihanshin metropolitan area, which also includes the cities of Osaka and Kobe.
