Kamigyo-ku is one of the eleven wards located within the city of Kyoto in Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Situated in the center of the present-day city, it formerly occupied the northern region of the ancient capital known as Heian-kyō.
Historically, the ward served as a prominent residential district for the royalty, aristocrats, and upper classes during the era of the old capital. The Kamo River serves as a natural boundary, flowing along the eastern border of the ward.
