Morioka is the capital city of Iwate Prefecture, situated in the Tōhoku region of northern Japan. It serves as a primary urban center within the prefecture's administrative boundaries.
As of August 1, 2023, the city had an estimated population of 283,981 residents living in 132,719 households. The city covers a total area of 886.47 square kilometres (342.27 sq mi), resulting in a population density of approximately 320 people per square kilometre (830 per sq mi).
