Hanamaki is a city located in the Iwate Prefecture of Japan. As of March 31, 2020, the city had an estimated population of 94,691 residents living in 37,773 households. It covers a total area of 908.39 square kilometres (350.73 sq mi), resulting in a population density of approximately 100 persons per square kilometre.
The city is well-known as the birthplace of the novelist and poet Kenji Miyazawa. It is also recognized for its hot spring resorts and as a primary location for Wanko soba, which is considered a local specialty of Iwate Prefecture.
