Hakodate is a port city located in the Oshima Subprefecture of Hokkaido, Japan. It serves as the capital city of the subprefecture and ranks as the third-largest city in the Hokkaido region, following Sapporo and Asahikawa.
As of January 31, 2024, the city had an estimated population of 239,813 residents living in 138,807 households. The total area of Hakodate is 677.86 square kilometres, resulting in a population density of approximately 354 inhabitants per square kilometre.
