Hiroshima is the capital city of Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan. As of June 1, 2019, the city had an estimated population of 1,199,391 residents. The city has been led by Mayor Kazumi Matsui since April 2011.
The Hiroshima metropolitan area serves as the second largest urban area in Japan's Chugoku Region, following the Okayama metropolitan area. In 2010, the gross domestic product (GDP) of the Greater Hiroshima, also known as the Hiroshima Urban Employment Area, was recorded at US$61.3 billion.
