Maebashi is the capital city of Gunma Prefecture, located in the northern Kantō region of Japan. As of August 31, 2020, the city had an estimated population of 335,352 residents living in 151,171 households. It covers a total area of 311.59 km2 (120.31 sq mi) with a population density of approximately 1,100 persons per km2.
Historically, Maebashi was the most populous city in Gunma Prefecture until Takasaki merged with nearby towns between 2006 and 2009. The city is recognized by the moniker "City of Water, Greenery and Poets," a title derived from its pure water sources, abundant natural environment, and its history as a birthplace for several contemporary Japanese poets, including Sakutarō Hagiwara.
