Fukui is the capital city of Fukui Prefecture, located in Japan. As of March 1, 2024, the city has an estimated population of 255,332 residents living in 107,553 households. It covers a total area of 536.41 square kilometres (207.11 sq mi), with a population density of approximately 476 persons per km2.
The city's geography is diverse, encompassing rural plains, mountainous regions, and suburban sprawl along the Route 8 bypass, though the majority of the population resides in a small central area. Historically, Fukui was significantly impacted by devastation during World War II and a subsequent earthquake in 1948. Due to its reconstruction following these events, it earned the nickname "Phoenix City," symbolizing its rebirth from destruction.
