Madaba is the capital city of the Madaba Governorate in central Jordan. It is situated on the Madaba Plateau, approximately 30 kilometres southwest of the nation's capital, Amman. The city has a population of about 60,000 residents.
The city is primarily recognized for its extensive collection of Byzantine- and Umayyad-period mosaics. These artworks feature various Christian and Greco-Roman mythological subjects. One of the most notable examples of this heritage is a large mosaic map from the Byzantine era that depicts the Holy Land.
