As-Salt, also known as Salt, is an ancient trading city and administrative center located in west-central Jordan. Situated in the Balqa highland at an elevation of approximately 790–1,100 metres above sea level, the city sits on the old main highway connecting Amman to Jerusalem.
The city is built within the crook of three hills near the Jordan Valley and serves as the capital of the Balqa Governorate. One of these prominent hills, Jabal al-Qal'a, features the remains of a ruined fortress dating back to the 13th century.
