Orvieto is a city and comune located in the Province of Terni in southwestern Umbria, Italy. It is situated on the flat summit of a large butte composed of volcanic tuff.
The city is characterized by its dramatic elevation above almost-vertical faces of tuff cliffs. These natural formations are complemented by defensive walls constructed from the same stone material.
