Porto Azzurro is a comune located in the Province of Livorno within the Tuscany region of Italy. It is situated on the island of Elba, approximately 130 kilometres southwest of Florence and about 90 kilometres south of Livorno.
Historically known as Porto Longone, the municipality became a direct possession of the Spanish crown in 1557 when Iacopo VI Appiani, Prince of Piombino, granted Spain the right to construct a fortress there. It was subsequently part of the State of the Presidi, which was governed by officials appointed by the central Spanish and later Austrian governments. In 1801, Napoleon established the Kingdom of Etruria in the area before it was eventually transferred to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
