Licata, formerly known as Alicata, is a city and comune situated on the south coast of Sicily, Italy. It is located at the mouth of the Salso River, positioned approximately midway between the cities of Agrigento and Gela.
The city developed into a major seaport during the turn of the twentieth century. It serves as a significant exporting center for sulphur, asphalt, and cheese, with its role in sulphur refining establishing it as the largest European exporting center for that commodity.
